Horizon: Zero Dawn, the next big PS4 exclusive set for release next Tuesday, could have some big shoes to fill if one research firm is to be believed. Gaming research firm SuperData is expecting Horizon: Zero Dawn to net about 6 million sales by the end of the year and 8 million total, according to a report by GameFly.
That total sales number is important, as it would put the new property by Guerilla Games right alongside established gaming royalty, as it would be close to the sales totals of games like Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.Â
SuperData CEO Joost van Dreunen says the game’s strong review scores – including ours, as we called Horizon: Zero Dawn “compelling, deep and stunning” – would be a big factor, but adds that the game’s release date could also come into play, saying that software sales should pick up now that hardware sales are starting to slow down, at least in the United Sates. He even goes far enough to say that the warm reception the game has received from the gaming press could end up making it a system-seller for those still undecided on whether or not to buy a PS4.
If all of this pans out, it would be huge for Sony, who has gone on record calling the game’s main character, Aloy, a “PlayStation icon of the future.” It would certainly be a big feather in the cap of those at Guerrilla Games, who is best known for the Killzone series, which has constantly been called a “Halo killer” but has so far failed to reach the same level of praise and acclaim that Master Chief’s adventures have.
Horizon: Zero Dawn will be released on PlayStation 4 Tuesday, February 28th. The open-world Action RPG will receive a Day One Patch to help offer smoother framerates.
