It looks like the first part of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake might not be released in 2016. Square Enix is using 2016 to fully develop the game as much as they can.

As reported by Siliconera, Square Enix producer Yoshinori Kitase gave an update on the game’s progress via the latest issue of Famitsu magazine.

He said: “I believe that this year will still be a year of preparations for Final Fantasy 7 Remake. I’d like to create a new kind of value for the hardware that is the PlayStation 4 for our next announcement.

2016 is the year that Square Enix will be putting their heads down and completing as much as they can in the game. We do know that the game will be released in multiple parts, so it won’t be like Final Fantasy XV where we have to wait for multiple years to actually play it.

It’s feasible that the first part of the game will be out in 2017. It would mark the 20th anniversary of the original Final Fantasy 7’s release on the PSOne. It makes sense for the first part to be released in 2017 instead of late 2016. From 2017 onward, we should expect to see the rest of the parts coming out.
