Nintendo Switch exclusive Super Mario Odyssey has entered the Japanese sales charts with huge numbers, according with Media Create. The platforming game sold 462.038 in its first week, which is by far the biggest launch ever for a 3D Mario game. Previous best-selling debuts include Super Mario Galaxy 2 for Wii (339.901) and Super Mario 3D Land for 3DS (343.492). While it could seem as Odyssey will not have much trouble breaking the 1 million mark, it will be interesting to see if it can get close to the more than 2 million that the 3DS entry has sold to this day.
There were other important releases this week, like the physical edition of ARK: Survival Evolved for PS4, which has done surprisingly strong numbers considering the title has been available digitally for a while. Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux debuts with numbers in line with the main entries of the series, which is good since it’s a remastered edition of the original DS title. Assassins Creed Origins launches with modest numbers, but actually improving by far the debut of Syndicate in 2015 (32,078).
On the hardware chart, Nintendo Switch understandably rules the list boosted by the launch of Mario. PS4 and 3DS follow from the distance, although it will be interesting to see if this increase in Switch’s shipments will extend to the following weeks.
