After leaking through a German magazine just days ago, THQ Nordic and Experiment 101 have officially announced BioMutant, a new open-world action RPG set to release next year.

The trailer begins with a mechanical grasshopper making its way towards an anthropomorphic animal that might remind players of Rocket Raccoon, albeit with more kung-fu abilities.  A much larger foe appears and the two do battle until it’s clear that he must make a quick escape. The cinematics don’t give much away in terms of gameplay, but the tone and idea set up make for an interesting title that I’m eager to learn more about.

According to IGN, players can customize their characters in BioMutant by taking advantage of various “mutations, bionic prosthetics, and weapons.” Player’s choices in regards to the customization will “impact the way your hero plays in real-time combat,” which is described as a mix between martial arts and small-arms skirmishes.

The world in BioMutant is set in an “imaginative post-apocalyptic universe” which can be explored through a variety of vehicles including mechs, balloons, jet skis, and more. Its Amazon listing indicates that it will feature a contextual storyteller that allows players to create their own stories of survival in its colorful world.

BioMutant is scheduled to launch sometime in 2018 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
