Trump administration just got handed a brutal international embarrassment as a key NATO ally announced to conduct military drills in Greenland

The alliance is on its last legs, it seems.

France just delivered a major international snub to President Trump’s administration by announcing it will conduct joint military exercises with Denmark in Greenland, as per The Hill. This is an immediate response to the ongoing diplomatic tensions surrounding the president’s desire for the United States to acquire the massive Arctic territory.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France will participate in military drills organized by Denmark in the region. Macron took to X to confirm the move. He explicitly stated, “At the request of Denmark, I have decided that France will participate in the joint exercises organized by Denmark in Greenland, Operation Arctic Endurance. The first French military elements are already on their way. Others will follow.”

This show of solidarity comes immediately after a serious breakdown in diplomatic talks at the White House. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen confirmed there was a “fundamental disagreement” between the U.S. and its allies following a crucial meeting.

You can tell Denmark and France are working together to signal that Greenland isn’t up for discussion, especially not under duress.

Vice President Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio attended the meeting and flat-out rejected requests from both Denmark and Greenland to stop discussing the potential U.S. acquisition. The tension is incredibly high because President Trump has made it clear that he views American ownership of Greenland as an urgent national security matter. The president stated that anything but American ownership would be “unacceptable.”

He views the territory as essential for American defense infrastructure and is actively pushing NATO to get involved in the process. He wrote about his reasoning, emphasizing the strategic importance: “The United States needs Greenland for the purpose of National Security. It is vital for the Golden Dome that we are building. NATO should be leading the way for us to get it. IF WE DON’T, RUSSIA OR CHINA WILL, AND THAT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!”

The Danish Defense Ministry confirmed that it is significantly boosting its own military presence around Greenland in response to widened NATO exercises. They’re sending aircraft, naval vessels, and soldiers to the territory. They clearly want to ensure the Arctic is well-defended, regardless of whether the U.S. is involved in the defense or the purchase.

The president has frequently brought up the idea of acquiring Greenland over the past few years, citing its strategic location and its massive mineral resources. This whole conflict flared up again recently following the American operation to capture Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, bringing President Trump’s focus on strategic global assets back into the spotlight. Now, with France jumping in to support Denmark, the Trump administration has been handed a very public signal that its NATO allies are not on board with its Arctic ambitions.
