Valve Announces Artifact, a Dota 2 Card Game

Yesterday night at The International, Valve’s annual Dota 2 eSports tournament, the company announced a new game with a short teaser trailer that can be seen below.

Artifact, a Dota 2 card game, will involve three boards and a selection of characters from the franchise, according to Polygon. Valve offered no details other than its estimated release date of 2018. The video unfortunately does not show anything other than close-ups of different colored crystals which eventually come together to form the Artifact logo.

Even without knowing a lot of the details, comparisons are sure to pop-up with Blizzard’s Hearthstone, a free-to-play fantasy card game that released over three years ago. Time will tell if Artifact gives Hearthstone a run for its money.

As you can probably guess just from looking at its like/dislike ratio on YouTube, fans are not happy about it. Though it’s easy to view what fans think about Artifact across social media, nothing quite sums up the disappointment as well as this tweet, capturing moments of anticipation and hopefulness during its announcement at TI7, only for it to turn into a huge letdown.
