Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs looks familiar to Assassin’s Creed fans because of its open world nature. This led many to assume the game would be running on the AnvilNext Engine that was used in Assassin’s Creed III. Not the case says Ubisoft Montreal.

In a recent tweet by Sebastien Viard, the developer’s technical director of graphics, the game is running on a brand new engine designed specifically for Watch Dogs.

“Watch Dogs uses a brand new engine called Disrupt, developed specifically for the game at Ubisoft Montreal. It’s not the Assassin’s Creed Engine,” says Viard.

Earlier today, Ubisoft also confirmed that next-gen versions of Watch Dogs were taking first priority and that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game have yet to be started in development. Watch Dogs has been confirmed as a launch title for the PlayStation 4.
