The newest sales figures for the Wii U in Japan show that the console has now managed to sell over 2.5 million units.

Media Create (via DualShockers) has revealed that the Wii U has sold over 2,508,312 units since it came out back in 2012. The console sold 2 million units in Japan back in November. This means 500,000 units were sold from then until now.

Japan is one of the few countries where the Wii U has more owners than the PS4. In Japan, the PS4 has sold over 1,679,537 units. To be fair though, the Wii U has been out on the market longer than the PS4.

It will be interesting to see how the Wii U will perform between now and the near future. The console’s future is uncertain at the moment with the NX looming in the background. The NX is supposed to be Nintendo’s next home console. People are hoping it’s more powerful than the company’s previous consoles at least.

From a worldwide standpoint, the Wii U has managed to sell over 10 million units after nearly three years on sale. The console never managed to capture the mainstream audience the same way the original Wii did. Nintendo is hoping the NX will change that.
