Throughout much of this generation of consoles, the announcement of the top selling console each month has featured little surprise as the PS4 has continued to dominate the competition. However, there have been months where the Xbox One managed to come out on top and this has happened yet again.

While the public NPD numbers will not be released until next week for the month of July, according to IGN, Microsoft got ahead of the game by announcing that they were “honored that Xbox One was the best-selling console in the U.S.”

This is the first time that Xbox One has taken the top spot in the monthly NPDs since last October, largely helped by the release of Halo 5: Guardians at the time. However, even with Xbox One edging out PS4 in exclusives last holiday season, they have not won since.

In addition to winning the month of July in console sales, Microsoft also revealed that actual game time on the Xbox One for the month were up more than 18% on July 2016. This definitely makes sense considering that the number of consoles being out there certainly increases the overall game time for console owners.

As said above, we’ll still have to wait until next week for the full July NPDs, as they have now pushed back the monthly release to the third Thursday of the month instead of the second.
