Donald Trump and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio were spotted at a UFC event in Miami, even as high-stakes peace negotiations with Iran were collapsing halfway across the globe, The Guardian reported. While the world watched for news on a potential resolution to a conflict that has already claimed thousands of lives and disrupted global energy supplies, the President and his top diplomat were busy taking in the action at the Kaseya Center.
Trump arrived at the venue shortly after 9:00 PM, accompanied by a group that included family members and UFC chief Dana White. It is no secret that White has been a consistent supporter of the President since his first term, and this latest appearance highlights that enduring connection. Other notable figures in attendance included the US ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, the rapper Vanilla Ice, and former FBI deputy director Dan Bongino.
The optics of the situation did not sit well with everyone. The House Democrats Foreign Affairs Committee took to X to voice their frustration, describing the scene as “amateur hour.” They pointedly noted that the Secretary of State skipped the Iran negotiations in Pakistan to attend a UFC fight, and they highlighted that the Special Envoy for South and Central Asia was also absent from the talks. They further emphasized that Pakistan currently has no confirmed US ambassador, adding that tens of thousands of Americans are in harm’s way while gas prices continue to climb.
It is quite a spectacle when you see the highest levels of government prioritizing a cage fight over critical international diplomacy
Despite these criticisms and falling approval ratings, the crowd at the Kaseya Center gave Trump a very enthusiastic welcome. A Kid Rock song played loudly as he made his way to his seat, shaking hands with fans and greeting the broadcast team, which featured podcaster Joe Rogan. Even as the President watched the fights, US Vice President JD Vance was busy briefing reporters on the failure of the peace talks in Pakistan.
Trump appeared entirely focused on the fighters, though he did lean over to chat with Rubio throughout the night. At one point, Rubio was seen showing the President something on his mobile phone. After Paulo Costa secured a win over Azamat Murzakanov, the fighter approached the President to shake his hand. Trump complimented him, telling Costa that he was a beautiful guy and that he was too good-looking to be a fighter. He also appeared particularly engaged during a violent and bloody fight between Josh Hokit and Curtis Blaydes.
The President’s affinity for the sport is well-documented, as he has often used it to connect with a younger, male demographic. He even has plans to host a fight event at the White House this summer on 14 June, which also happens to be his 80th birthday. Dana White mentioned in a video on social media that a fight involving Hokit had been added to that upcoming card at the direct request of the President. White remarked that Trump and Rogan essentially built the fight themselves, and both competitors have already accepted the terms.
Back in Pakistan, the reality of the situation was much grimmer. Vice-president Vance, who spent 21 hours in meetings with Iranian officials, stated that he communicated with Trump at least half a dozen times during the negotiations. He identified Iran’s refusal to abandon its nuclear weapons programme as the primary stumbling block.
Vance insisted that the core goal of the President is to secure an affirmative commitment that Iran will not seek nuclear weapons or the tools to create them. While he acknowledged the failure to reach an agreement was bad news, he framed it as more problematic for Iran than for the United States.
Meanwhile, Iranian officials offered a different perspective on why the talks stalled. Iran’s parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, claimed the US was unable to gain the trust of his delegation despite constructive initiatives. The Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, suggested that nobody should have expected a breakthrough in a single session.
