Seat swap requests have become one of the most debated parts of flying, and window seats tend to be the most fiercely guarded. A TikToker says she faced one of those requests on a short flight from Charlotte to Orlando, as a young girl seated beside her kept asking to trade for the window. The woman’s story was picked up by BroBible.
The traveler, Frankie, posts on TikTok as @frankieshino. In her video, captioned with a question about whether viewers would switch seats with a kid on a two-and-a-half-hour flight, she says she had already boarded and settled into her window seat when a family arrived late. Each family member went to a different seat, which led Frankie to believe they had flown standby.
The girl, who Frankie guessed was eight or nine, sat beside her. Once the plane began backing away from the gate, the girl announced that she wanted to sit next to the window. Frankie says she told the child she didn’t think they were allowed to switch at that point, and that a swap would have meant all three people in the row getting up.
The window seat debate had TikTok viewers siding firmly with the passenger
Frankie told the girl they could switch later, and the child spent the next stretch ordering drinks from a flight attendant and watching a movie without headphones. When the girl asked again, Frankie changed the subject and asked whether it was her first trip to Disney World. The girl said she goes “all the time,” according to Frankie.
The next request came near the end of the flight, and Frankie says the arrival announcement gave her a ready reason to stay put. She added that she made sure the girl could see out the window as much as she liked, though the child “wasn’t even looking.” Frankie also noted that the girl’s mother never said anything, and that the parents never asked about switching seats themselves.
Viewers under the TikTok were nearly unanimous about the window seat. However, a few were harsher on the adults than on the child. One commenter said they “definitely would not have switched,” while another put it simply, saying they pay for the seat they want. One viewer suspected a parent had put the child up to it, as the family had been split up across the cabin after boarding late.
Others thought Frankie was too polite. One commenter said she should have put on her headphones, curled up against the window, and not engaged at all. Another reminded her that she was the adult in the situation and was allowed to say no. Similar standoffs have played out before, as seen when a passenger refused to leave a stranger’s window seat and the clash ended up online.
Frankie did not name the airline in the video, and she admits she didn’t know what to say when the girl first asked. However, she said she still doesn’t know how the girl thought they would switch places in a full row of three, as climbing over another passenger was never an option.
The family has not been identified, and Frankie’s question to viewers is likely to keep drawing answers as more travelers weigh in on where they draw the line with children who ask to switch seats.
Attack of the Fanboy was unable to independently verify the girl’s parents’ side of the story, as this account originates solely from Frankie’s TikTok video.
