A woman thought her boyfriend of four years proposed at dinner and everyone cheered, then he explained what the ring meant

A ring pulled out at dinner usually means one thing to the people at nearby tables, and that is what a TikTok creator says happened on a recent date with her boyfriend of four years. The diners cheered, she called her sister, and then her boyfriend reportedly told her they were not engaged. Her video about it has drawn hundreds of thousands of views, according to The Sun.

The creator, Louisa Melcher, posts on TikTok as @loulouorange. On-screen text in the video says she “actually got un-proposed to,” calling it the most embarrassing experience of her life. Melcher captioned the clip “like do i dump him over this??” and spends most of the video wearing the ring while she walks viewers through what happened at the restaurant and afterward.

According to Melcher, her boyfriend pulled out a ring before dessert, and she assumed he was proposing. Other diners in the restaurant reportedly thought the same thing and started cheering. Melcher says she called her sister from the car, and her sister celebrated too. However, it was then, she says, that her boyfriend told her they were “not engaged” and that the ring was a promise ring.

Melcher says she feels like a brat for wanting an engagement ring instead

Melcher says her boyfriend promised to get her “a way nicer one when it’s really the time,” which left her asking when that time would be. She says she is 31, turns 32 this month, and has been with him for four years. With that history, Melcher says, she had no reason to assume the ring meant anything other than a proposal.

Melcher also asks whether any other women understand where she is coming from, as she says wanting an engagement ring rather than a promise ring makes her feel like “an entitled brat.” Promise rings are generally given as a sign of commitment between partners, often well before an engagement. However, many viewers argued that four years in and past 30, that stage should already be behind the couple.

The video has drawn thousands of comments, and most of them sided with Melcher. One viewer said promise rings are meant for people under 21 and asked what exactly her boyfriend was promising at this point. Another told her she was not the problem in the situation, while a third accused the boyfriend of breadcrumbing her after four years together, as he had offered a ring without a timeline.

The moment in the car stood out to several viewers. One commenter said that even setting the promise ring aside, letting Melcher call her sister and share the news was cruel, as it could not be taken back. Others focused on the restaurant itself and asked what her boyfriend said to the cheering diners, though Melcher does not explain how that part of the night played out.

Some advice was more practical. One viewer suggested Melcher thank him for the ring, tell him promise rings are better suited to teenagers, and then talk through a timeline, including couples counseling. Questions about how long to wait for a proposal come up often, and a similar debate followed when a man who waited 12 years to propose was turned down.

Melcher’s page includes earlier relationship videos that do not obviously line up with this one, including a July clip in which she refers to her “fiancé” and an August video about a proposal at a baseball game tagged #breakup and #ex. She has not explained how those posts connect, and one commenter on the new video wrote that they hoped it was a skit.

Melcher has not said whether she plans to stay with her boyfriend, though her caption suggests she is weighing whether the promise ring is a dealbreaker after four years together.

Attack of the Fanboy was unable to independently verify her boyfriend’s side of the story, as this account originates solely from Melcher’s TikTok video.
