A Dallas woman recently shared a dating story that involved a man who picked her up in a luxury car but then asked her to pay for the bill and gas. Brittany Bowen shared the story in a viral video. She thought she was going out with her usual type of date.
According to BroBible, the man arrived driving a Mercedes-Benz, which he said was fully paid off. The pair went to brunch and ordered food and drinks. The total came to about $45, but Bowen said the cost would have been lower if the man hadn’t ordered several cups of fresh-pressed orange juice.
In her TikTok clip, Bowen explained that she expected him to pay the bill, given the car and the impression he was trying to make. When it was time to pay, the man suddenly said his card was frozen due to fraud. He told her, “My card is frozen due to fraud,” and added that “The banks don’t open on the weekends so I don’t have any money.”
A paid-off Mercedes doesn’t mean much when your date ends up paying for everything
Bowen said she’s a “people pleaser” and decided to cover the entire cost of the meal. She wondered why he hadn’t canceled the date when he realized he was broke. She said, “And if you figured it out before you picked me up and took me on the date, why would you pick me up? Literally just cancel.”
The situation got worse on the ride home. The car ran out of gas. While luxury car brands like Mercedes are keeping certain features even in their electric vehicles, this particular Mercedes couldn’t make it home without more fuel. He asked her for more money, saying, “Hey I’m not going to make it all the way to your house. Can we stop at the gas station? And can you put some gas in my car?”
Bowen realized she had to choose between putting gas in the car or walking home. She ended up paying another $20 for fuel to make sure he dropped her off safely at home. She spent $65 total on the date. The man continued to text her for an entire week after the date.
She noted her “read receipts are on” and she just “stopped responding.” Viewers who watched her story called out the man’s behavior, suggesting he planned the entire thing to get a free meal and gas. One commenter said, “Plz never change, sharing free knowledge is kind.”
Many people doubt his fraud story was true. Some have shared their own shocking reveals about hiding the truth from others, though usually not about being broke on a date. Some men online discussed how they would handle a real card failure on a first date. Showing up in a Mercedes and immediately asking your date to pay for food and fuel is a red flag.
