Shooting cases aren’t something we used to hear about once in a while; now they are breaking us even more by making headlines often. We have heard about a youth football game going wrong when a woman intervened in the kids’ brawl, but something extremely horrific has now taken place. In Michigan, an 18-year-old boy opened fire on a soccer field when he was turned down from playing in an elementary school match. While firing, he shot a 15-year-old boy and a mother of 8 and both of them eventually died.
According to People, the Michigan police reported that the man who is being accused killed a 15-year-old boy and a 39-year-old woman over an argument during the match. It was reported that the police received an emergency call at about 6:40 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5, in Grand Rapids, Mich. When the police reached the scene, both of the victims were on the ground suffering from serious gunshot injuries. The boy died on the scene, while the woman was taken to the nearby hospital.
Grand Rapids Interim Police Chief Joe Trigg stated, “A bunch of kids were playing at the park here, and the suspect approached, asked to engage in a game of soccer. For whatever reason, he was turned away. He did not like the fact that he was turned away, so a verbal altercation started, which led to the suspect pulling out a firearm and shooting that juvenile.”
Witnesses claim the woman died trying to save the 15-year-old boy
The woman named Savannah Villareal, whom the attacker killed, died trying to save the youngster. Villareal was a mother of 8, and this sudden loss may have caused an unimaginable pain to her family. She was there trying to protect the children and ended up losing her life at the hands of an 18-year-old. Her sister, Angelita Tierrablanca, told WWMT, “She was just watching them because there have been several incidents here where they have been verbally attacked and things. She was so selfless, she loved children.”
The teenage victim was identified as Jeremiah Cuevas-Griffin, as reported by Fox17. Her mother, even in the time of distress, praised Villareal for trying to save her deceased son. Mildred Griffen said, “She gave her life to save my son.” The mother also mentioned. “He considered Savanah his auntie. She’s been in his life his whole life. She was his babysitter. And … I’m sorry.”
We have an example of a man who set fire to a building in frustration, but this time, a teen ended up causing tragedy in frustration. The 18-year-old, identified as Rafael Martinez-Lopez, has now been arrested. He is facing two counts of open murder, two felony firearm charges, and three additional weapons charges, as reported by WWMT and WOOD, citing police. We are hearing about homicide incidents quite often these days, and they may have induced fear into the minds of many.
