LaMelo Ball secured a massive victory for the Charlotte Hornets, but his post-game antics have quickly become the talk of the league. After hitting a game-winning layup to push the Hornets past the Miami Heat in a 127-126 play-in tournament thriller, the star point guard was captured on camera delivering two right-hand jabs to the head of Hugo, the team mascot. It was a bizarre moment that immediately cast a shadow over what was otherwise a historic night for the franchise.
The win marked the Hornets’ first home postseason victory in a decade, and the atmosphere in the arena was electric. According to AP News, Ball was clearly riding a high after orchestrating the final play. He drove to the basket for a right-handed layup with only 4.7 seconds left on the clock, effectively avenging two earlier mistakes that had nearly cost his team the game.
Once the final buzzer sounded, the scene on the court was pure chaos as players, coaches, and fans celebrated the narrow win. During the on-court celebration, Ball was seen flexing at midcourt before he turned his attention to Hugo. Local television station WBTV caught the moment on video, showing the point guard throwing two seemingly playful blows at the mascot’s oversized head before shifting into a bear hug with teammate Coby White. Hugo, for his part, simply walked away from the interaction.

The celebration was short-lived, however, as questions about Ball’s behavior throughout the game began to mount. Earlier in the contest, during the second quarter, Ball appeared to swipe at the leg of Bam Adebayo, causing the Heat center to fall on his back. Adebayo was forced to leave the game after playing only 11 minutes and did not return due to a lower back injury.
Although no foul was called at the time, the fallout was swift. After the game, Miami coach Erik Spoelstra didn’t mince words, stating that Ball should have been ejected for the incident. Ball later apologized, claiming he felt disoriented after taking a hit to the head on a drive to the basket just seconds before the play involving Adebayo. Ultimately, the league handed down a $35,000 fine and a Flagrant 2 foul for the play.
It’s been quite the journey for Ball since he was selected with the third overall pick in the 2020 NBA draft. He quickly made a name for himself as a rookie, becoming the youngest player in NBA history at that time to record a triple-double. Ball’s star power extends to the gaming world, where LaMelo Ball (Season 7 Invincible) is among the best Point Guards in NBA 2K23. Despite success, he’s dealt with adversity, including a fractured wrist in his debut season and a season-ending ankle injury in 2023.
Throughout his career, he has showcased a high level of skill, including a 50-point performance against the Milwaukee Bucks in November 2024 and a 37-point game against the Washington Wizards in February 2026 where he hit a career-high 10 three-pointers. He even finished the most recent regular season with 272 made three-pointers, just one behind his teammate, Kon Knueppel.
Despite his individual success, the focus remains on the Hornets’ upcoming schedule. As the ninth seed, the team is looking to break a 10-year playoff drought. They are now set to travel for a road game against the loser of the matchup between Orlando and Philadelphia. Ball spoke briefly about the winning shot after the game, noting, “We drew up a good play, I feel like. Just orchestrated it and it worked.”
He also took a moment to praise the fans, adding, “The crowd was amazing. Everyone who came out today was real loud, so it was a good crowd.” The game itself was a roller coaster. Charlotte forced overtime thanks to an off-balanced 3-pointer from Coby White with 10.8 seconds left in regulation, followed by a missed jumper from Tyler Herro.
The Hornets then surrendered a five-point lead in the extra period, largely due to two blunders by Ball. After Herro hit a turnaround 3-pointer, Ball turned the ball over at midcourt and followed it up by fouling Herro on a 3-point attempt. Herro sank all three free throws to put Miami up 126-125, which set the stage for Ball’s final heroics. “We just stayed together throughout it all, it was an up-and-down game,” Miles Bridges said after the win.
“But that’s what the play-in is about. We did a great job executing on offense, LaMelo did a great job getting a layup, and then we executed on defense on the other end.”
