Three Georgia officers were talking to an Atlanta man during a domestic call when police say he suddenly pulled a gun and shot two of them

Three DeKalb County police officers were sent to an Atlanta-area apartment complex on Sunday evening to handle a domestic call. Shortly after they started talking with the man at the center of it, two of those officers had been shot, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The man accused of firing at them, 26-year-old Demontavious Soho of Atlanta, was wounded when an officer returned fire.

The GBI says the shooting happened at about 6:19 p.m. at an apartment complex at 2000 Bouldercrest Road. Three DeKalb County Police Department officers had responded to a reported domestic incident between Soho and another person, and they found him inside a unit in the complex’s M Building. The officers began speaking with him, and the GBI has described these details as preliminary.

Not long after the conversation began, Soho allegedly drew a handgun and opened fire on the officers, hitting two of them. One officer fired back, striking Soho at least once, but he managed to run from the scene. Atlanta Police Department officers later found him and took him into custody, the GBI said. The DeKalb department then asked the state agency to investigate the shooting.

Both officers are stable, and the suspect is expected to be booked once he leaves the hospital

The two wounded officers were taken to a local hospital, where they are listed in stable condition. Their names have not been released. Soho was also taken to the hospital for treatment of his gunshot wound and remains in custody there. Once he is released, he is expected to be booked into the DeKalb County Jail on a charge of aggravated assault against a peace officer, according to the GBI.

DeKalb County Police Chief Greg Padrick told reporters on Sunday night that Soho fired on the officers when they encountered him at the door. The chief credited nearby camera systems with helping officers track the suspect down so quickly after he ran into a wooded area. However, the GBI’s account notes only that Atlanta officers located and arrested him, without describing how he was found.

DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson also spoke after the arrest, saying she was grateful the suspect had been taken into custody. Neither the GBI nor DeKalb police, however, have identified the other person involved in the domestic incident, or said whether anyone else at the apartment was hurt. It’s also not yet clear what the original dispute was about, as investigators have only released preliminary details.

Calls that start as a routine disturbance can turn dangerous for responding officers in seconds, as seen when a driver plowed toward Wisconsin police. In DeKalb, the GBI says the three officers were still speaking with Soho when he drew the handgun, and two of them were struck before he ran from the complex. The third officer was not reported injured.

The GBI is asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact its Atlanta Regional Investigative Office in Conyers at 770-388-5019, or to call the GBI Tipline at 800-597-TIPS (8477). Tips can also be submitted online or through the agency’s See Something, Send Something app, and the investigation remains active. The agency has not said how long its review is expected to take.

Once the GBI wraps up its independent investigation, the case file is expected to go to the DeKalb Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review, which is the standard process in GBI officer-involved shooting cases.
