The Dallas Cowboys have a terrible defense this season. They give up 31.6 points per game and allow 404.6 yards per game. Both of these numbers are the second worst in the entire NFL. Only the Cincinnati Bengals are doing worse. Matt Eberflus is in his first year as the team’s defensive coordinator, and things are not going well. He does not have good enough players to make the defense better.
According to Bro Bible, things got even harder when Jerry Jones decided to trade Micah Parsons right before the season began. Parsons was one of the best pass rushers on the team. Now he plays for another team and has 6.5 sacks in seven games. He is also tied for third in the league in pressures. The Cowboys really needed him this year.
But Jones does not seem worried about any of this. He recently talked to media about something completely different. Jones wanted to discuss his oil drilling business instead of football.
So the owner cares more about making money from oil than winning games
Jones has put more than $1 billion into a company called Comstock Resources. This company is drilling for oil in East Texas, where there might be huge amounts of oil deep underground. Jones explained his thinking by saying, “There’s $100 billion present value with gas out there. That’s why I’m talking to you on the telephone rather than trying to fix our defense with the Dallas Cowboys.”
Jones has never really treated the Cowboys like a team that needs to win championships. He sees them more like a business that makes money. Fans keep buying tickets and team merchandise no matter how badly the Cowboys play. So Jones keeps making money even when the team loses. The Cowboys used to be one of the most famous and successful teams in football. Now many people think they are a joke.
The defense keeps getting worse every week. Eberflus cannot do much because he does not have talented players to work with. Getting rid of Parsons made everything worse because he was one of the few stars on that side of the ball. Nothing will get better unless big changes happen.
Jones said out loud what many people already suspected. He would rather spend his time on his oil business because it could make him way more money. The $100 billion he talked about is much more than the Cowboys will ever bring in. The team’s problems have gotten so bad that former Cowboys players are even fighting with each other on social media about what is wrong with the franchise.
Stephen Jones is Jerry’s son and currently works as the general manager. When he takes over the team one day, things probably will not change. The Jones family looks at the Cowboys as a way to make money first and a football team second. Fans who want to see the team win a Super Bowl need to understand that ownership has different plans.
Cowboys fans still show up and support their team even after many years of losing. But Jones just said he cares more about drilling for oil than fixing the roster. Even though the Cowboys have put together their 2025 coaching staff, the biggest problems come from the owner and what he thinks is important. Fans should not expect things to get better any time soon.
