Jake Paul is getting ready for another boxing match on November 14 in Miami. This time, he will fight Gervonta “Tank” Davis, a boxer who usually fights in a much lighter weight class than Paul. The fight is not officially sanctioned, but Paul pointed out in a recent interview with Fox News Digital that “It’s the same deal. Everyone remembers that there’s a winner.”
Paul has been criticized many times for who he chooses to fight. He has gone up against Mike Tyson, who is 31 years older than him, and Anderson Silva, a former UFC fighter who was also much older. He has also fought boxers who are not very well known, like Andre August and Ryan Bourland. Now people are talking about the big weight difference between him and Davis, but Paul says this fight proves he is serious about boxing.
“Being the underdog with half the internet thinking I’m going to get killed and blah, blah, blah, and proving to people that I can box better than someone who’s been doing it their whole life,” Paul said, according to Fox News. “I think people will be shocked after fight night as to my skills and how I strategically came in with a game plan and I executed it.”
This fight demands a completely new approach
Paul said his preparation for this fight is totally different from what he has done before. “A lot of it’s focusing on speed, but also just high-level thinking in the sport, ring IQ, not making any mistakes. Not getting countered, not getting lazy at any moment, alertness, all of these things,” he explained.
“But I have to be the sharpest I’ve ever been for 39 minutes straight, and that’s not easy to do against someone who’s one of the pound-for-pound best.”
Because the fight is not sanctioned, some people think it might be fake or set up ahead of time. Paul and his business partner have warned that they will sue anyone who keeps saying his fights are rigged. They even threatened to take Piers Morgan to court, and Morgan changed what he said after that. Paul’s journey as a YouTube boxer has been closely followed by fans and critics who continue to debate whether he belongs in the sport.
Paul said the legal threats seem to be working. “People haven’t been talking. And rightfully so, right?” he said. “Like, stop lying on my name. People can say a lot of things, but when they’re blatant lies that actually defame my brand, people saying fights are rigged, steroids, whatever it is, that’s where it goes too far.” He added that people can hate on his fights or choose not to watch them, but spreading lies will result in lawsuits.
After this fight is over, Paul wants to spend time supporting his fiancée, Jutta Leerdam. She is a speedskater who will try to win an Olympic gold medal after getting silver at the 2022 Beijing Olympics. Paul said being an athlete couple is challenging.
“It’s intense to be an athlete couple and training all the time. We’re not always there for each other, but we’re FaceTiming all day, pretty much supporting each other,” he explained. Once his fight is done, he plans to support her as much as possible. For fans looking for more boxing content, there are plenty of great boxing anime and manga series to explore while waiting for fight night.
