Walmart is now limiting how many trading card packs people can buy after a video went viral showing someone buying hundreds of Pokemon cards at once. Starting Wednesday, November 5, customers can only buy five packs or boxes of trading cards each time they visit the store.
According to Daily Dot, a memo that appears to be from Walmart’s employee system was posted on Reddit and shared all over social media. The memo says that the store’s checkout systems and website have both been updated to stop people from buying more than five packs automatically. Walmart made this change because too many people want trading cards, some buyers are reselling them for profit, stores are running out of stock, and there have been safety problems.
The memo talks about why this is happening, saying that “We’ve seen incidents and disputes and crowding over these cards. By setting a purchase limit, we aim to reduce conflicts.” A lot of Pokemon fans think this new rule is because of something that happened recently and went viral online.
Scalpers have been ruining it for everyone
This new rule seems to be a response to a TikTok video that Mike Romano posted in late October. He filmed someone at a Walmart in Las Vegas buying what looked like dozens or maybe even hundreds of Pokemon card tins all at the same time.
“This is what they’re selling to one person. This guy right here. One person,” Romano says in the video. More than 12.6 million people have watched the TikTok since he posted it, and many viewers got angry about what they saw. People are tired of scalpers who buy tons of products just to sell them for more money later.
The video made a lot of Pokemon fans upset because this kind of thing has been going on for a long time. When one person clears out all the cards from a store, regular shoppers and collectors cannot find anything to buy. Some of these cards can be worth significant amounts of money, which is exactly why resellers want to grab as many as possible.
Most people are happy that Walmart finally decided to put a limit on how many trading cards one person can buy. But a lot of folks also think this should have happened way sooner. In the comments section of the viral video, people shared what they thought about the situation.
One person named Matthew wrote, “Manager is 100% getting paid,” suggesting that maybe the store employee got something in return for letting someone buy so much. Another commenter made fun of the whole thing by saying “grown men arguing over some Pokemon cards.”
Even though some people doubt this will completely fix the problem, many Pokemon card fans think it is at least a move in the right direction. The new rule should help make sure more regular customers can actually find and buy trading cards instead of watching scalpers take everything.
Nobody knows yet if limiting people to five packs will really stop resellers, but it shows that Walmart is paying attention to customer behavior and trying to handle popular collectible items differently.
