The question of who should pay on a date still causes confusion for many people. Some believe the man should always pay, while others think whoever asks should cover the cost. Many people also think splitting the bill is the fairest option.
TikTok user Moraea, known as @monotonechick, posted a video about an uncomfortable moment during a recent date. She had been going out with a guy for a few weeks, and after working out at the gym together, they stopped at Taco Bell to grab something to eat.
According to Bro Bible, Moraea said at the drive-thru she wanted to pay and gave him her card. He put in her PIN, but her card got declined. “Card declines. Card declines again,” she said in her video. “So finally, he pays. I’m like, ‘Wow, this is embarrassing.'” When she looked at her bank account later, she saw she had plenty of money and thought he probably typed in the wrong PIN.
He took that comment way too seriously
The guy asked her to go to breakfast a couple days later. She wanted to keep things relaxed, so she made a joke when they met up. “Oh, I have cash today from my favorite ATM, my dad,” she told him. She explained that her dad had actually sent her money through Cash App because she was worried about her card getting declined again.
The breakfast seemed to go well. They went to Starbucks after and spent time drawing together before saying goodbye. Moraea thought everything was fine and even wondered if he might kiss her. But when she got back home, she got a surprising text message. He wrote that he didn’t think their relationship would work out in the long run.
She asked him why he felt that way. He said her joke at breakfast bothered him and that he wouldn’t want someone to see him as an ATM since he was looking for a serious relationship.
Moraea told him that was “the most insensitive text” she had ever gotten. She explained that the joke wasn’t serious and that she had paid her dad back for the cash. “You’re judging me without even knowing the story,” she said to him.
He called her later and said he was sorry. “He said, ‘I think I’m a little judgmental. I should have just asked you what you meant,'” Moraea remembered. They’re still seeing each other, but she said she now feels worried about being herself. She’s afraid that any small joke might make him end things again.
Moraea posted another video where she talked about why she wanted to pay in the first place. She said she believes in splitting costs equally and doesn’t think men should have to pay for everything. Moraea also showed a message he sent her where he said her joke was a “red flag” that made him think she was bad with money. He wrote that he doesn’t have much dating experience and might have thought too much about it.
Another commenter said, “You gotta raise your standards girly.” One viewer advised, “I’m seeing red flags, just drop it and move on.” Another person added, “Babygirl. Please don’t pay on a date again one. Two do not ever give your pin to a man or anyone you don’t even know if or anyone. Three, you guys have seen each other for 2 weeks and your mom is calling him a son in law?”
While Starbucks has been at the center of viral stories recently, this dating mishap shows how even simple coffee dates can take unexpected turns. In fact, issues with orders and timing at the coffee chain have frustrated many customers lately.
