A bizarre new viral trend is sweeping TikTok, featuring users biting into sugary Likit horse treats, prompting immediate warnings from health experts and the company that manufactures them, as per Daily Dot. This isn’t the first time certain individuals have decided to consume products meant for horses, but this time, the focus is purely on taste and texture, not medication.
The trend’s origin story began back in October when certified “horse girl” Gracie (@_gracielambert) posted footage of herself trying a Likit treat before passing it along to her equine friend. Gracie liked the flavor and soon started posting more videos sampling the different varieties. Her most popular entry, where she tried the banana flavor, absolutely blew up and racked up over 22 million views. She wasn’t a huge fan of the banana herself, but the apple version was a major hit with both her and her horse, Spirit.
It seems like the appeal is the unique texture and super sugary flavor. TikToker @aminasnotokay recently gave the apple Likit a rave review, saying, “Whoa, there’s like, levels to this flavor.” She described the texture as “chewy, but then also buttery soft.” If you’re wondering what it tastes like, she summed it up pretty easily: “It lowkey just tastes like sugar.” She even compared the consistency to the Fun Dip sticks we all used to eat as kids.
By late November and into December, people who didn’t own horses were starting to buy the treats just to test them out
Another TikTok user, @tybottofficial, also compared the treat to a Fun Dip stick, though he felt he could detect a little apple flavor in the mix. “It has just a little bit of apple but not too much apple,” he shared, adding that “It is getting better each bite!” That’s better than some of the other viral foods on TikTok lately.
But the crucial question is whether it’s actually safe for people to eat something specifically formulated for a completely different species. This is the same concern that popped up when some individuals were consuming medicated paste meant for horses. The standards for animal food are always going to be different from those mandated for human consumption, so taking a bite of your pet’s snack is always a gamble, even though this trend isn’t as harmful as some of the other ones we have seen lately.
Likit, the U.K. company that makes the viral treats, definitely doesn’t recommend that humans snack on their products. In their FAQ section, the company addresses the trend directly. They note that the treats are made from “human food grade raw materials,” but since the treats aren’t made in a human food factory, Likit stated that they “cannot be recommended for human consumption.” Their official stance is clear: “Likits are for horses, not humans!”
The main reason you should stop eating these treats immediately comes down to sugar. Horses have drastically different nutritional needs than we do. Likit’s formulation is based on the fact that horses consume about 125 grams of sugar for every hour they spend grazing. If you’re a person, you’re supposed to stick to a maximum of 50 grams of added sugar for the entire day. If you’re looking for a sugary treat, you should probably just stick to the human candy aisle.
