President Donald Trump is defending his policies, claiming he has strong support from a “silent majority” of Americans. However, his approval ratings have dropped significantly. Trump is also threatening legal action against organizations that publish negative poll results about him.
According to Mediaite, Trump spoke to reporters in the Oval Office and dismissed concerns about his low approval numbers. He said he is doing what the “silent majority” wants and reminded everyone that “Elections have consequences.” Trump stated, “The people want law and order. And we have a solid majority. You know, we have a silent majority of people. They don’t go and riot and everything else. But they like what we’re doing.”
Trump also praised the National Guard deployment in Washington, D.C., claiming the White House gets daily calls thanking him for making the city “so great.” Despite his confident statements, recent polls show his approval rating is deep in negative territory one year into his second term.
Trump’s approval numbers show serious trouble with independent voters
A major national poll found that only 34 percent of independent voters approve of Trump’s job performance. Independent voters are crucial for winning elections. The poll also showed that 52 percent of independents believe the country is worse off now than it was last year before Trump took office. These numbers are particularly concerning for Republicans trying to keep control of Congress this fall.
Immigration was once Trump’s strongest issue, but recent polls show 55 percent of voters disapprove of how he’s handling it. The aggressive enforcement actions appear to be driving this disapproval. A shocking 59 percent of voters believe Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have been “too aggressive.” Among independents, 71 percent say ICE has gone too far in its enforcement efforts.
These negative views increased after immigration agents shot and killed citizens in two separate incidents in the Twin Cities area, sparking local protests. When a reporter asked if Trump would consider pulling back agents in Minnesota, he answered firmly: “No, no. Not all,” making it clear he won’t change his approach. The Trump administration has faced growing scrutiny over enforcement actions caught on video.
Trump responded angrily to the unfavorable poll numbers by threatening legal action against the publication that released the survey. On Truth Social, he wrote that the poll, which he said is “always tremendously negative to me,” would be “added to my lawsuit against The Failing [outlet].” He demanded their lawyers keep all records showing how they “computed” the results. Trump also declared that “Fake and Fraudulent Polling should be, virtually, a criminal offense.”
The polling firm defended their work. A spokesperson stated on social media that their polls “have been widely cited for their rigor” and dismissed Trump’s complaints. The spokesperson explained, “President Trump likes polls that appear favorable to him and dislikes polls that do not.
But whether a poll is good or bad for the president has no bearing on our methodology.” Congressional Democrats have criticized the DOJ’s handling of journalists covering controversial enforcement actions. Trump also struggles with other key issues, showing 40 percent approval on the economy and 42 percent on managing the federal government.
