President Trump lashed out at Rep. Thomas Massie from Kentucky, directly accusing the seven-term Republican of opposing his agenda and urging Kentucky voters to replace him in Congress, as reported by The Hill. This is a pretty wild turn, especially since Massie has been a long-standing figure.
During a visit to a packaging plant in Hebron, Kentucky, which is located in Massie’s 4th Congressional District, President Trump called out Massie’s vote against the president’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.” Trump claimed this vote threatened to undermine national security and economically hurt working-class people. “He’s the worst,” Trump told the cheering crowd. “He only votes no. He just votes no. It doesn’t matter. I could give him the best things in the history of a Republican voter, and he’d vote no. There is something wrong with him.”
President Trump is also actively endorsing Massie’s primary opponent, Ed Gallrein. Gallrein is a farmer and a former Navy SEAL officer who hasn’t held political office before. Trump stated that Gallrein decided to enter the race because Massie is “not doing right for our president.” Gallrein, for his part, is vowing to align perfectly with Trump on every issue facing the country. He told the rally attendees, “You deserve an authentic, true Republican conservative that stands shoulder to shoulder with our president and the Republican Party and against the Democrats who are trying to destroy our nation.”
This primary challenge is shaping up to be the biggest threat to Massie’s lengthy career in Congress
It’s definitely being watched closely as a barometer of President Trump’s continued influence over the GOP, even as his approval numbers have seen some shifts. Massie, first elected to the House in 2012, has a well-known history of going against GOP leaders, particularly on federal spending and the separation of powers when it comes to war decisions.
His independent streak has certainly gained a lot of attention during Trump’s current term, where Massie has often been a lone voice of dissent against some of the president’s major priorities, including that GOP megabill, Trump’s tariffs, and the president’s use of military force in Iran.
Massie also made waves as one of the loudest champions for releasing the government’s files on Jeffrey Epstein. Interestingly, Trump had initially vowed to release those files during his 2024 campaign, but he reversed course after being briefed that he was a featured figure within them. Massie’s push for transparency on that front definitely put him at odds with the president’s later position.
Massie, who didn’t attend Trump’s rally in his district, maintains that his voting record simply reflects his conservative principles. He also argues that his positions actually align with the promises President Trump made on the 2024 campaign trail, which Massie says the president is now breaking.
Heading into the event, Massie took a swipe at the president for promoting attendance with sponsored bus rides. “They’re paying to bus people to the Trump event in my Congressional District,” Massie wrote on X. He added, “What they’ll discover is Trump fans in KY-4 and across the entire Commonwealth also support my work on the Epstein files, reigning in spending, ending forever wars, draining the swamp, and food freedom!”
