Usha Vance, the Second Lady, recently shared that she has “no expectation” of seeing “eye to eye” with Vice President Vance on every single issue. She emphasized that while they might not always agree, the couple strives to maintain an open mind with each other in their discussions.
“I’m not his staffer. I’m not involved in this in any professional sense,” the Second Lady told NBC News. She added, “There’s no expectation that we are going to see eye to eye on everything.” Instead, she explained that the real expectation in their marriage is to be open-minded and engage in meaningful conversations. Vance sees her role as providing valuable input from the perspective of someone who loves her husband and wants him to succeed.
Their differing viewpoints and potential disagreements have certainly been a hot topic of discussion and speculation during their time at One Observatory Circle. For instance, the vice president generated quite a bit of buzz in October when he expressed his hope that his wife would eventually convert to Christianity from Hinduism.
It seems from her comments that the Vance family is going strong, even with their outward differences
Usha Vance was actually on the other side of the political spectrum before her husband’s Senate run. She was a registered Democrat and didn’t even cast a Republican vote until his successful 2022 campaign to represent Ohio in the Senate. Vice President Vance himself transitioned from being a vocal critic of President Trump to a staunch supporter.
While she isn’t a political staffer, Usha Vance admitted that her private conversations with the vice president sometimes turn into advisory sessions, especially when a topic is “important personally.” She likes to stay in the loop. “There are conversations all the time,” she stated. “I do really like to understand what’s going on in his world, what he’s really focused on, what concerns he has, because it’s a marriage. I mean, I want to be supportive of him, and if I don’t really know what’s going on, then I can’t do that.”
Despite being the first Hindu Second Lady, Usha Vance shared that she’s never felt pressured to convert or conform to any specific mold as a prominent figure in the Trump administration. “I do feel very comfortable in that no one has ever asked me to engage in any kind of litmus test on anything,” Vance explained. The couple currently shares three children and is expecting a fourth. This means Usha Vance would become the first woman since the 1870s to give birth while serving in the role of Second Lady.
This interview with NBC News was released alongside the launch of Usha Vance’s new podcast, “Storytime with the Second Lady.” This podcast is specifically designed for kids, inviting special guests to read their favorite storybooks. “Reading for pleasure at home builds stronger literacy and classroom skills and opens the door to a world of opportunity for children,” Vance stated about the podcast. She’s genuinely excited to have special guests share great stories, spread their love of reading, and help reverse the decline of childhood literacy rates across the country.
