Trump called Barron’s tech skills ‘unbelievable,’ but the task he was praising turned out to be something every teenager can do

President Trump recently shared an anecdote about his son Barron, 19, calling his technological ability “unbelievable” during a Fox News interview. The comments quickly drew attention online, as many listeners interpreted the task Trump described as a routine and widely understood computer function. The story, first highlighted by UNILAD, prompted a wave of reactions across social media.

During an interview with Laura Ingraham, Trump spoke broadly about his children, saying, “If you look at my kids, all of my kids, they’ve been very good, they’ve been very smart. They love our country and they’re proud of their father.” When Ingraham asked about any specific skills Barron might have in business or politics, Trump pivoted to technology.

He recounted what he found to be an impressive feat. “I turn off his laptop, I said, ‘Oh good,’ and I go back five minutes later, he’s got his laptop. I said, ‘How’d you do that?’ ‘None of your business, Dad’. He’s got an unbelievable aptitude in technology,” Trump said. The remark drew immediate reactions, with many reading it as the president being surprised by Barron’s ability to simply wake a laptop from sleep mode.

Plenty of parents have been caught off guard by this exact thing

Waking a computer from sleep mode is a standard feature of how modern operating systems manage power states. A device put to sleep, rather than fully shut down or logged off, can often bypass parental control settings that would otherwise kick in at startup. Many teenagers figure this out quickly, allowing them to extend screen time or access content past set limits.

The pattern is well documented. Back in March 2013, a parent shared their experience on a tech forum after discovering that their children were using sleep mode to circumvent Family Safety restrictions on a Windows 8 computer. Despite setting up curfews, time limits, and activity tracking, they found that waking the laptop from sleep bypassed all of it, with no login required and no activity logged.

The parent called it an “utter disaster” and had to resort to requiring a full shutdown each night. It is the kind of workaround kids tend to discover on their own, and one that routinely catches parents off guard, much like the TSA staffing issues that well-intentioned solutions have repeatedly failed to fix.

On Reddit, commenters were quick to weigh in. One user wrote that it sounded like Trump closed the lid on the laptop and left the room, unaware of sleep mode. Another compared the praise to parents celebrating a child for assembling LEGOs. Some gave Barron more credit, speculating that he may have bypassed a password or a software-based restriction, which would be a more involved workaround. Even so, commenters generally agreed it fell well short of “unbelievable aptitude.”

Trump closed the segment by expressing broader pride in his children. “I’m lucky, you have to be a little bit lucky too… They’re good kids and they work hard,” he said. It is not the first time one of his public statements about his family has generated more discussion than he likely anticipated, a pattern that has become familiar across his various remarks, including some of his more eyebrow-raising claims about his administration’s citizenship policies.
