NBA star Brandon Clarke was rehabbing a season-ending injury, but an arrest in Arkansas reveals a dark reality of his time off

Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke was released on bond on April 2 at 12:27 PM in Cross County, Arkansas, following his arrest on April 1. According to Fox News, the arrest brought to light a challenging period for the NBA player, who has been sidelined for the majority of the current season due to significant injuries.

Clarke faces a series of serious charges, including trafficking a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, fleeing in a vehicle while exceeding the speed limit, and improper passing. These heavy charges follow a troubling trend in basketball; recently, Alabama standout Aden Holloway was also arrested on felony drug charges after investigators found 2.1 pounds of marijuana. This isn’t just a minor traffic stop; these are pretty heavy charges, and it’s certainly not the kind of news anyone wants to hear about a player, especially one who’s already dealing with a lot.

When asked about the situation, Grizzlies head coach Tuomas Iisalo kept his comments brief. “I’m aware of the report, but don’t have any comments,” Iisalo told reporters on April 1 before the team’s game against the New York Knicks. It’s understandable; the team is likely still processing the news, and it puts them in a tough spot.

Rehab season was supposed to be quiet, not like this

The arrest comes at a particularly difficult time for Clarke, who has been out of commission for virtually the entire 2025-26 NBA season. He was initially recovering from surgery on his right knee, which kept him off the court. To make matters worse, he later suffered a right calf strain, further extending his time away from the game.

The Grizzlies had announced late last month, on March 24, that Clarke would miss the remainder of the season, with the expectation that he’d be ready to return next season. It’s a really unfortunate turn of events for a player who was supposed to be rehabbing and preparing for a comeback. Clarke, 29, has been a consistent presence for the Grizzlies since they acquired him with the 21st overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft.

He was initially drafted by the Oklahoma City Thunder but was traded to Memphis, where he’s remained ever since. He actually made the 2019-20 All-Rookie team, averaging 12.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game in a bench role, which is pretty solid for a rookie.

Throughout his seven seasons in the league, Clarke has primarily served as a reliable depth player for the Grizzlies, starting in 50 of his 309 games played. He’s tallied career averages of 10.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. Injuries have hampered his availability recently, limiting him to just 72 games over the past three seasons, including the two games he managed to play this season before being sidelined.

The Cross County Sheriff’s Office website confirmed Clarke’s booking and release. Cross County itself is located about 50 miles west of Downtown Memphis, which gives you a bit of geographical context for where all this went down.

The bond amount for his release hasn’t been disclosed, and additional details remain unavailable as the situation develops.
