‘A whole civilization will die tonight’: Trump issues doomsday ultimatum to Iran, then sends bizarre well wishes in the same breath

The clock is ticking.

President Trump issued an ominous warning to Iran on Tuesday, setting an 8 PM EDT deadline and stating that “a whole civilization will die tonight” unless “something revolutionarily wonderful” takes place, as reported by The Hill. This stark ultimatum came with a bizarre mix of messages, threatening destruction while simultaneously sending well wishes to the Iranian people.

“A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will. However, now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change, where different, smarter, and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen, WHO KNOWS?” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

It’s quite a statement to digest, especially when you consider Iran has a population of 93 million people. Despite the president’s insistence on “Complete and Total Regime Change,” Iran’s leadership has actually elected the son of the late supreme leader, who was killed on the first day of the war.

Adding to the complexity, the president’s warning also included a direct blessing for the people of Iran

“We will find out tonight, one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the World. 47 years of extortion, corruption, and death, will finally end. God Bless the Great People of Iran!” he continued in his post. This juxtaposition of extreme threat and good wishes certainly makes for a confusing message to parse.

Even as these words were being posted, military action was already underway. The Pentagon began striking military targets on Iran’s Kharg Island on Tuesday, just hours before Trump’s deadline was set to hit. These strikes are part of a broader, ongoing campaign. Airstrikes continued to pound Tehran overnight, hitting residential neighborhoods and what appeared to be a weapons depot nestled in the mountains.

The Israeli military confirmed its own strikes against an Iranian petrochemical compound in Shiraz and a large ballistic missile array site located in northwestern Iran. There was also an attack on the Khorramabad International Airport in western Iran. Another attack on an unidentified target in Alborz province reportedly killed 18 people. News also emerged of nine people killed in the city of Shahriar and six more in Pardis from other airstrikes.

Iranian officials, however, have remained incredibly defiant in the face of these threats. They’ve even gone so far as to encourage their citizens to form human chains around power plants, which President Trump had specifically threatened to strike.

The regime made a direct appeal to “all young people, athletes, artists, students and university students and their professors” to protect these vital national assets. Alireza Rahimi, identified by Iranian state television as the secretary of the Supreme Council of Youth and Adolescents, reportedly stated in a video message that “Power plants that are our national assets and capital” must be protected.

The country’s leadership is showing no signs of backing down. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced early Tuesday that more than 14 million people, including himself, have volunteered to join the war effort. “More than 14 million proud Iranians have so far registered to sacrifice their lives to defend Iran,” Pezeshkian wrote in a post on X, adding, “I too have been, am, and will remain devoted to giving my life for Iran.”

The core of President Trump’s ultimatum revolves around the Strait of Hormuz. He set the 8 PM EDT deadline for Tehran to lift its blockade on shipping traffic through this crucial waterway. The Strait of Hormuz carries about one-fifth of the world’s oil supply. Trump warned that if the blockade wasn’t lifted, “all Hell” would be unleashed on the country.

Just the day before, he told reporters at a White House news conference, “We’re giving them until tomorrow at 8 o’clock. And after that, they’re going to have no bridges, no power plants.” He even went so far as to say that Iran “could be taken out in one night, and that night might be tomorrow night.”
