A Minnesota father was recently charged in the death of his 10-month-old son after allegedly leaving the infant unattended under a weighted blanket for several hours, according to New York Post. Omni Maxx Morningstar, 26, was arrested on Monday following the tragic passing of his son, Remington, last October 1 in their Mankato home.
According to court documents and police reports, Morningstar put Remington down for a nap at 11 AM on October 1, 2025. He reportedly didn’t check on his son for nearly five hours. During this critical time, police said Morningstar was in a separate room, wearing headphones and chatting with friends online on Discord. It’s genuinely heartbreaking to consider what was happening in the next room while he was preoccupied. Morningstar reportedly found Remington unresponsive and “very warm” around 3:55 PM.
First responders attempted life-saving efforts, but the child was pronounced deceased at a local hospital. His temperature had reportedly risen to a staggering 104.7 degrees. Morningstar later told police, He also stated that he “did not understand” how his son’s temperature had risen so dramatically.
You keep thinking one check could have changed everything
A medical examiner determined that Remington likely died from asphyxia caused by compression from weighted blankets, which totaled nearly 20 pounds. This highlights both the danger of unsafe sleep environments and the high stakes of medical testimony. Dr. Bruce Levy, Tennessee’s former chief medical examiner, admitted his erroneous testimony 25 years ago helped wrongfully convict Russell Maze for his son’s death. Though Levy originally cited violent shaking, he now believes Maze is innocent.
This wasn’t the first time Remington had been left in a potentially dangerous situation. Remington’s mother, Isabella Morningstar, told investigators about a prior incident roughly a month before his death. She found their son overheated under a king-sized blanket. The baby’s father reportedly admitted he had forgotten about Remington while he was playing video games during that time. Isabella also stated that Morningstar had previously covered Remington with a comforter to “muffle the sound of crying.”
She reiterated that the couple had used weighted blankets on Remington. Morningstar told authorities that Remington had a history of fevers and colic, which had led to multiple hospital visits. He explained that he started using the weighted bedding months earlier to keep the boy from crying and moving his legs, claiming, “it worked every single time.”
However, he also acknowledged that Remington had overheated at least two other times, including one occasion when he was rushed to the hospital after his temperature spiked to 104 degrees. “I mean, it only happened twice before,” Morningstar told police. “It spiked two times and we fixed him two times.” It’s incredibly concerning to hear about repeated incidents like these.
Morningstar is currently being held in the Blue Earth County Jail. He has been charged with second-degree manslaughter and is due back in court on April 16. Isabella Morningstar posted on social media the day after Remington’s death, sharing her grief. “It almost doesn’t feel real,” she wrote. “I keep looking for the sweet tiny world that was blessed to me but instead of being here with me he is being loved by the most high Jesus Christ.”
She added, “Rest easy my boy my Remington forever nine months but the absolute best nine months of my life.”
