Travel influencer stuck on ‘plague ship’ with three dead issues emotional plea: “We’re not just headlines, we’re people”

Nearly 150 passengers remain confined to their cabins aboard the MV Hondius, a cruise ship stranded off the coast of Cape Verde amid a deadly suspected hantavirus outbreak. As of now, seven people have been reported ill and three have died, with two cases laboratory-confirmed as hantavirus. Among those onboard is travel influencer Jake Rosmarin, who has been using Instagram to share updates and urge the public not to lose sight of the human reality behind the headlines.

Rosmarin has been direct in his messaging: the people aboard this ship are not a statistic. They are individuals with families and loved ones waiting for them at home. He noted that the greatest burden for passengers is the uncertainty, and that what everyone onboard wants most is to feel safe, receive clear information, and get home. As reported by LADbible, two patients are currently being prepared for medical evacuation, while one person remains in intensive care, though there are reports that patient is showing signs of improvement.

The circumstances on board are serious. Hantavirus is typically spread through contact with the urine, saliva, or feces of infected rodents, but experts are investigating the possibility of human-to-human transmission in this case. The World Health Organisation is overseeing disinfection efforts and other public health measures on the vessel, and Rosmarin has said he has found reassurance in knowing there is a structured response in place.

The crew has become a lifeline for the passengers stuck in isolation

In updates shared via Instagram Stories, Rosmarin posted a selfie from his cabin balcony, noting he is feeling well, getting fresh air, and being kept fed by the ship’s crew. The MV Hondius outbreak has drawn international attention, with the vessel having originally departed from southern Argentina in March on what is typically a 33 to 43-night Atlantic Odyssey cruise. He has been consistent in praising the staff for their efforts throughout the lockdown.

Hantaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they naturally infect rodents and are only occasionally transmitted to humans. In the Americas, they are known to cause hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome, a respiratory illness that can be fatal. In Europe and Asia, the virus more commonly results in haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. There is no specific cure or vaccine for hantavirus, and early medical intervention remains the most effective factor in improving survival outcomes, a reality underscored by cases like a man whose symptoms went undiagnosed until his illness had progressed fatally.

Health authorities are continuing to investigate the source of the outbreak, with investigators looking at both rodent contact on the ship and potential exposure during a port stop in South America. The WHO has stated that the risk to the broader public remains low and that no travel restrictions are currently necessary. For the passengers aboard the MV Hondius, the focus remains on containment, medical support, and finding a way home.
