Jake Paul was eyeing a major comeback after his Anthony Joshua loss, but a grim medical update on his broken jaw could end his boxing career

The professional boxing career of Jake Paul is currently hanging in the balance, as the influencer turned fighter deals with the lingering effects of a broken jaw. This injury, sustained during his high-profile loss to Anthony Joshua in December 2025, has left the 29-year-old facing the real possibility that he may never step back into the ring for a competitive bout. It is a sobering reality for someone who has spent the last several years aggressively carving out a space for himself in the combat sports world.

Jake Paul provided a candid update on his status during an interview on The Ariel Helwani Show. He admitted that the full extent of the damage is still being evaluated by his medical team five months after the fight. The brutal shot he took from the former world champion in the sixth round of their December 19, 2025, meeting at the Kaseya Center in Miami has had lasting consequences.

Beyond the fracture itself, Paul noted that he is dealing with the loss of a tooth and expects to undergo a dental implant procedure. “We’ll see what my doctors say. be able to get a more accurate timeframe, or can I even fight again? That is definitely in the realm and possibilities of things [that I can’t]. [The jaw] does feel a lot better as weeks and time goes by, but I definitely need to get cleared first to be able to spar,” Paul explained.

Imagine taking a punch so hard it ends your career

When asked directly if his time in the sport could be over, Paul did not mince words. “Most definitely [my boxing career could be over]. It just depends on how the bone heals. Then, also, there’s a tooth missing. I’m pretty sure I’m going to have to get an implanted tooth of some sort. I’m not sure how much time that’s going to add to things, but we just have to see and figure out what the smartest thing is for me.”

This uncertainty marks a drastic shift for a fighter who has been remarkably active since his debut in 2018. Before the Joshua fight, Paul had built a reputation as a savvy operator who knew how to market himself and generate massive interest. His November 2024 victory over Mike Tyson in Texas, for example, secured the largest boxing gate receipts in United States history outside of Las Vegas. However, the Joshua bout proved to be a different beast entirely.

The fight was widely criticized due to the significant size disparity between the two, with Paul weighing roughly 53 pounds less than the former unified heavyweight champion. The injury itself was severe enough that it required the installation of two titanium plates in his mouth. Consequently, Paul faced an indefinite boxing ban due to his injuries. In the immediate aftermath of the fight, he was forced to abstain from solid foods for at least one week.

The long-term recovery process is clearly testing his patience, even if he maintains a positive outlook on the experience as a whole. Despite the physical toll and the potential end of his boxing journey, Paul expressed no regrets about taking the fight against a world-class opponent. “I think it was such a win on so many different levels, and I had a really good experience,” Paul said.

“Just overall, such a net positive for me, my companies, my fighting experience, my content, and yeah, I just really will fight anybody, to be honest. I’ve been saying that, and I think people now believe me, but I’m here for entertainment purposes,” he added. The journey to this point has been anything but conventional. Paul first rose to fame on Vine in 2013 before moving to YouTube, where he became one of the platform’s highest-paid creators.

His transition into entertainment roles, such as his time on the Disney Channel series Bizaardvark, eventually gave way to a full-time pursuit of boxing. Throughout his 14-fight career, he faced diverse opponents from former NBA player Nate Robinson to MMA stars like Tyron Woodley and Anderson Silva. The loss to Anthony Joshua was his second professional defeat, following a split decision against Tommy Fury.

While he briefly earned a top-15 WBA cruiserweight ranking after beating Julio César Chávez Jr., he lost that position by early 2026.
