A mother on Reddit appears displeased by an experience involving the American flag. According to The Nerd Stash, she claimed that her 6-year-old was corrected by a teacher in Arizona over her drawing of an American flag. The mother also stated that it was a “nice” flag that her kid made during an art project, but the teacher allegedly told her to redo it on the other side of the page because she was upset. The mother labeled this incident as the reason “why kids start to hate education.”
According to her, the 6-year-old was asked to draw a picture using shapes as part of her art project, so she drew a “nice” American flag using “rectangles and stars.” The mother shared an image of the flag, showing a “house, tree, and person holding a balloon.” However, it appears to have upset the teacher, as the kid was reportedly told that her drawing “did not follow directions.”
The mother also said that her 6-year-old’s teacher told her, “She was not supposed to draw a flag, just shapes.” Following this, the teacher allegedly told the kid to turn the same paper over and redo the drawing. No comments from the teacher after this incident were found.
The mother called the other drawing “uninspiring”
The kid’s mother didn’t share just the image of the flag, but also showed the other drawing, calling it “uninspiring.” She wrote in her post, “The other side of the paper has a very uninspiring collection of shapes.” As seen in the second image, the other drawing consists of an uneven zigzag line and an object intended to be a star. At the bottom, there are two stars and two other shapes that appear to be diamonds.
The mother said that she still encouraged her 6-year-old, “I told her she did a good job and I thought it was very creative.” She then concluded her statement by saying, “And this is why kids start to hate education.” Apart from the mother’s opinion on this incident, several others also shared their views when her post gained significant traction on Reddit (about 23,000 upvotes and 1,000 comments).
Several appeared to focus on the “shapes” part. One wrote, “I wanna talk to this teacher about what they think a shape is.” While another questioned, “Is the flag not made of shapes?” Apart from these, one user seemed concerned, stating, “This is literally the child taking the next step in the lesson. The kid is saying “OH! I get it!” and the teacher is telling them to slow down. The teacher missed the teachable moment there.”
The comment section featured similar ideas from the audience about the American flag issue. The identity of the mother and the accused teacher remain unknown. The incident is not independently verified.
