It appears that GameStop will not be carrying the Wii U Basic System for much longer.  Following E3 2013, the retailer is releasing instructions to send back all new 8GB Wii U Basic models.  According to an internal memo discovered by Kotaku, it seems that Nintendo is discontinuing the Wii U Basic model.

Nintendo Wii U Basic Recall – Two Week Preparation On Tuesday, 6/18, all stories will need to return all new/unopened Wii U Basic (020359). .. Stores that have 10 or more in stock will receive shipping cartons from the [distribution center]. .. All other stores will need to save shipping cartons for this recall.

Could this retailer action be in preparation for price drop on the larger capacity system?  Nintendo did recently announce that Japan would see 32 GB version of the white Wii U model.  Perhaps the company is second guessing their decision to release the bare bones console.

If Nintendo does have plans in the works to cut the price of the Wii U, we’ll likely hear next week at E3.
