Get Gamestop DLC with less hassles

The Gamestop ID program will soon be implemented so that the games retailer can more easily service your DLC needs from their brick and mortar stores.  Aiming to take the “friction”  out of purchasing map packs and other DLC by eliminating the need for them to input the long strings of verification codes and transfer them directly to your PlayStation Network or Xbox Live accounts.

The SVP/GM of Gamestop recently spoke with Ars Technica about the method they plan to use, and how it will eliminate the friction that people face when wanting to purchase the content from Gamestop.

“As I understand it, we’re neck and neck, or we sell even more, than they sell directly through Xbox Live or the PlayStation Network. Which speaks to our access to gamers who care about playing those games.” – said Freeman

“Ultimately, we want to reduce even more of that friction, so when you buy that map pack in our store, we’re going to be able to associate your Xbox profile with your GameStop profile, and then automatically push that to your download queue.” – He continues

While this is a novel idea and a way for Gamestop to maintain relevance in an industry that is slowly inching toward digital distribution, who leaves the comfort of their home to purchase DLC from a retailer? Most gamers I know, hate that Gamestop attempts to upsell them every time they are in the store and it’s one of the main reasons that I would rather tempt the fates of a local Wal-mart than go inside the games retailer.
