Elite: Dangerous has been a hugely popular game ever since it first appeared on Kickstarter. Fans flocked to the space simulator, backing it and eventually buying copies off of the game’s standalone website. However, as the game became available on Steam these buyers were slightly frustrated at the fact that they couldn’t port their already owned game to Valve’s service. That has now changed as the team has announced that those who bought early versions of Elite: Dangerous will be receiving free Steam keys as a thanks for supporting the game.

“We’ll soon be offering Steam keys to anyone who bought Elite: Dangerous from the EliteDangerous.com store who would like a key, and to anyone who buys the game from our store in the future” wrote Elite: Dangerous Community Manager Ed Lewis. “We always appreciate it when you buy direct from our store because it means we can put more into supporting and developing Elite: Dangerous, but we know a number of long-time players and backers like to play through Steam and we think it’s fair everyone has that option, not just new players.”

All those who purchased Elite: Dangerous via Kickstarter will get the Steam key option as well. The keys will begin being offered on May 28th. The delay is so that Frontier, the game’s developer, and Valve can finish up work on the server architecture. Elite: Dangerous runs on standalone servers, so there needs to be some method of connecting your Steam account to the existing Frontier account used for Elite: Dangerous. Once this is done on May 28th you’ll be able to generate a Steam key on your Elite: Dangerous account page. Keep checking for more instructions as the day gets closer.
