We’re busily counting down the minutes until the reveal of the Nintendo Switch’s launch details, but we’re also biting our nails over concerns that the system, in true Nintendo fashion, won’t be powerful enough to compete with the PS4 or Xbox One.
Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang has done his best to take care of some of those fears, in an interview with VentureBeat. Speaking at CES, he describes the console and its upcoming Nintendo Direct presentation as “very Nintendo,” from the craftsmanship involved to the software it’ll be using.
However, he may have also given Nintendo’s biggest critics among “hardcore” gamers, those who say Nintendo is “just for kids,” by adding that “the gaming experience is amazing, surprising, and safe for young people, for children,” before adding “I believe people are going to be blown away, quite frankly. It’s really delightful.”
GameSpot reports that the Switch, which is a hybrid of a gaming console and a handheld device, will indeed be less powerful than the offerings from Microsoft and Sony, but at least more powerful than Nintendo’s current console on the market, the Wii U. That’s based on rumors that the Switch will use Nvidia’s Maxwell graphics processor, not their newest model, the Pascal. Of course, that’s entirely different than the reports from January’s issue in Maximum PC, so until Nintendo releases hard details nobody knows for sure.
Possible Launch Titles
While we wait for the November 12th event, a poster to the Nintendo Switch reddit stumbled upon what he claims are GameStop’s records for the Nintendo Switch launch lineup. Included are games like Monster Hunter, Dragon Quest X, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and ports of Skyrim, Splatoon and Mario Kart 8, all set to release on March 17th. GameStop was set to hold an investors meeting today, so this may hold up.
You may recall March 17th being what we reported as the Nintendo Switch’s possible launch date. We’ll know for sure Thursday night.
