It seemed almost inconceivable considering how most of the conversation focused on politics rather than gameplay when it first arrived, but it turns out that most people don’t care about that and picked up Far Cry 5 in droves, now making it the fastest-selling entry in the franchise’s history.
This news comes via a press release from Ubisoft who not only revealed the previously mentioned achievement, but that Far Cry 5 has double the sales compared to its predecessor, Far Cry 4, within its first week. Furthermore, it now stands as the second-biggest launch for Ubisoft in history (first place is The Division), with consumers spending $310 million in total — half of which came in the form of digital sales.
Ubisoft Americas President Laurent Detoc accompanied the press release with the following statement:
“Far Cry 5, like the real Montana, is a vast and gorgeous playground filled with colorful stories for players to enjoy and share. We’re grateful to newcomers and fans of the series who have joined us in Hope County and have collectively grown our community.”
Executive Producer Dan Hay also chimed in saying:
“I’m proud that the culmination of years of passionate work from the team is paying off, and that Far Cry 5’s experience resonates with so many people. We are humbled by players’ reception of Far Cry 5 and fired up to keep growing and supporting the Far Cry community in the months and years to come.”
Indeed, even if you consider the politics and actual gameplay-related faults, there is still much to love about Far Cry 5. In fact, our review praised it for being the “the generational leap that fans have been waiting for,” concluding that it could very well be the “best Far Cry game to date.”
