PS4 and Other PlayStation Warranties Updated

In accordance with an FTC ruling, Sony has updated their warranties for the PS4 and other PlayStation devices. Owners can now use third party devices and open up their system without fear of voiding their warranty. The changes stem from the “void if tampered” sort of stickers that are found inside console and other tech devices. Those were proven to be illegal in the US, so while the sticker remains, owners of the PS4 can feel free to open the console and remove the sticker while maintaining their original warranty.

The previous warranty for the PS4, PSVR, PS3, and PS Vita stated that owners could not use unauthorized third party devices and they could not open up their console without voiding the original warranty. Both of these statements have been removed. This should allow owners to tinker with their system without fear, though the newly updated warranty hasn’t been put to the test in the real world just yet.

Nintendo and Microsoft have not commented on this new ruling yet, but expect them to make similar moves if their console warranty includes the same sort of language. Many organizations have been fighting for the consumer’s right to modify and repair their own devices, and this was just one of the results.
