Microsoft’s E3 Press Conference held a lot when it comes to the future of the Gears of War franchise. The Coalition revealed not one, not two, but three new Gears of War games — A mobile game, a tactics game, and a sequel to Gears of War 4.
Apparently the branding that we saw in the E3 reveals is going to stick with the franchise. That branding saw these Gears of War games dropping the “Of War” and just going with Gears 5, Gears Pop, and Gears Tactics for the new games.
While it was unclear whether this was just placeholder titling or a complete brand shift at E3 itself, it has been confirmed to be the latter. Rod Fergusson, Studio Head at The Coalition, confirmed that, at least in Gears 5, that there would be no more “Of War” in the title.
“BTW it’s just Gears 5,” says Fergusson. “That is what’s going to be on the box,” says the developer.
We saw only a little bit of Gears 5 at E3 2018, but with the title change perhaps Microsoft is now focused more on the Gears than the War.
