The Sonic the Hedgehog movie has been coming along very slowly given the material it’s based on (it began back in 2014), but finally we know who will voice our little blue racer.
Ben Schwartz and Variety both confirmed his role as the hedgehog and if you’ve seen him in Parks and Recreation, you know he might just be a perfect fit for Sonic.
I. LOVE. 90S. BLUE. ICONIC. CHARACTERS. I am beyond excited about this movie. It’s gonna be amazing. I have been training by running, wagging my finger and impatiently tapping my foot. GOTTA GO FAST! https://t.co/SOYqgnf3ym

Schwartz joins Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik and James Marsden as Tom Wachowski along with Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Debs Howard and Jeanie Cloutier.
Jim Carrey playing a goofy, maniacal villain certainly holds promise, and could even have more depth than expected given the actor’s more recent, darker outlook and persona.
The movie is set to be a mix between CGI and live-action, with James Marsden playing our human lead. That mixture doesn’t always work and in the world of video-game to movie adaptations, it’s going to be an uphill battle. But Sonic handles the hills without sweating and the movie does have Tim Miller (the Deadpool director) as the executive producer and Jeff Fowler (the Where the Wild Things Are director) as the director. Where the Wild Things Are was also a CGI live-action mashup and beloved children’s book and it did really well with critics and fans alike. So here’s hoping!
We don’t know much about the story other than this one sentence from the IMDb page:
“A cop in the rural town of Green Hills will help Sonic escape from the government who is looking capture him.”
We can assume that Marsden will be playing the cop while there also seems to be a dark, government organization hunting him down, which suggests (at least to me) that he’s maybe broken into this dimension from another? I do like the nod to the franchise with the Green Hills name of the town. Hopefully it’ll be filled with loop-de-loops, gold rings and jumping fish.
The Sonic the Hedgehog movie is slated to hit theaters in November 2019.
