Recent leaks suggest that Konami is planning revivals of some of its most popular series including Metal Gear, Silent Hill, and Castlevania. While Konami has long been a powerhouse for producing beloved franchises that have amassed large fanbases, recent years have seen the studio shift its focus to gambling games. If rumors are true, however, that may soon be changing.
Konami, historically, has been home to some franchises that have woven themselves into the fabric of gaming. The Metal Gear series, headed by video game auteur Hideo Kojima, popularized the stealth genre and brought movie-style cinematics to gaming. However, following a dispute between Kojima and Konami during the development of Metal Gear Solid V, Kojima left Konami to start his own studio, Kojima Productions. This seemed to spell the end for the franchise. The Silent Hill series has become synonymous with psychological horror in the gaming world, but it has been neglected by Konami for several years. Similarly, Castlevania is a series with a strong following but weak support from Konami.
Anonymous publishing sources who spoke to VGC claim that Konami may be changing their gameplan, and are in the process of developing revivals for Metal Gear, Silent Hill, and Castlevania. According to VGC, the revivals come following a restructure in Konami which will see the company placing renewed emphasis on its biggest gaming brands. The first release will be a reimagining of the current Castlevania series, and it is reportedly currently in production at Komani in Japan. While there has been much speculation that the original Metal Gear would be receiving a remake, VGC’s sources claim that Komani’s project is instead focused on Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, although the studio also intends to remaster the original Metal Gear games for modern consoles. As for Silent Hill, reports claim that multiple games are being developed by various external studios.
All three franchises are highly popular, and as such, it would make sense for Konami to invest in them. Despite Kojima’s departure from Konami, calls for a new Metal Gear entry or remake have been ceaseless, while Castlevania and Silent Hill have continued to remain relevant despite their age. Successful revivals of these franchises would certainly do well to counterbalance Konami’s recent misstep with eFootball 2022 which has garnered itself “overwhelmingly negative” community ratings and reviews on Steam. The low reviews can be attributed to glitchy gameplay and bad animations.
None of the rumored revivals have yet to receive a release date.
