FIFA 22: How to Play Better Defense

Recommended Videos

In FIFA 22, knowing how to play defense is just as important as knowing how to attack since just like you, your opponents are also capable of opening their toolboxes in an attempt to change the tide of the match. With that said, we will give you a few tips sure to help you play better defense on FIFA 22 and dominate in both ends of the pitch.

Stand Your Ground

First, being able to stand your ground in front of attackers, or Jockey, is one of the most important things when playing defense on FIFA 22. You can stand your ground by holding L2/LB when in control of a player without the ball. Doing that will make your defender change its stance and adjust his angle in a way that forces the attacker into a 1 on 1, giving you more control of the situation. Doing that can not only allow you to steal the ball but can also give your team a little more time to shift its defense and fix the lines during a fast breakthrough.

Read the Plays

As we all know, defending doesn’t start in the last quarter of the pitch. In FIFA, reading your opponent’s intentions as well as making sure you are able to cut their passes can help you take full control of the game in only a few minutes. To do that, it is important that you know how to manually shift your players, which can be made by moving the right stick towards the players you want to control. Doing that will allow you to always stay where you want on the pitch.

It is also important to know when to and not to tackle. Remember, you can force your opponent into making the wrong pass by closing the gate in all other options, which can be in some cases just as effective as taking the ball by force.

Don’t Be Afraid to Change/Adapt

When playing defense on FIFA 22, adaptability is also a key factor in the outcome of many matches. With that said, in the game, players can customize their team’s settings and tactics in a wide array of different ways, which includes the ability to change how the defenders will behave. So don’t be afraid to make changes, especially in the behavior of both your left and right backs. In the end, just having the players in the best position on the pitch can increase your defensive potential by a ton.
