Cities Skylines 2 Growth Guide: How to Expand City Limits

You must open the Map Tiles to expand city limits in Cities: Skylines 2, and you can do so by hitting the ‘M’ key or hitting the Map Tiles icon on the bottom-left of the UI. This opens up tiles of the map you can purchase to expand your city, where you’ll then be able to connect it with roads and build out further.

A couple of tips to consider while preparing to grow:

  • Avoid expanding too early, especially if your services are too few or too expensive as it is
  • Expand tile-by-tile, scoping out resource gain opportunities
  • Keep in mind what you want to build there, to prevent mixing zones and causing pollution

When Should You Buy More Map Tiles in CS2?

In general, you should slowly expand when you’ve addressed all forms of zone demand in your beginning area, then expand outward once you’ve got a good spread of the basic services. Otherwise, you’ll find things like your electricity or healthcare services will be overburdened by all the new civilians, so consider expanding out to harvest new resources.

Industrial zones, and specialized industries like farms, are great options when you’re getting ready to make your city bigger, lowering potential spending on services, and even building up your resource pools. Don’t be afraid as you go out there. There are only mild possibilities you’ll find a tornado, don’t let it knock the wind out of your sails!
