Cancelled Marvel MMO Screenshots Leak Online Showing Avengers, X-Men, and More

A Marvel MMO was in the works for a short period of time before being recently canceled, and images from the game have surfaced online showing what could have been. Ramiro Galan, a principal designer at Pixelkings, posted several screenshots that showcase character creation for the canceled MMO.

According to the set of images, the canceled MMO placed emphasis on “rich and vibrant colors with stylistic tones that pay homage to Spider-Man Into the Spiderverse.” From the released screenshots, this is abundantly true, and the game would have gone in the exact opposite direction of Marvel’s Avengers.

The screenshots provide an inside look into the game’s character creation system, which would have allowed players to pick between four marvel factions: X-Men, Avengers, SHIELD, and the Fantastic Four. Rather than allowing players to take control of famous Marvel heroes, this MMO would have allowed them to create their own custom hero similar to DC Universe Online.

This makes sense, as the game was helmed by Jack Emmert, who currently leads DCUO and helmed the City of Heroes MMO. Looking deeper into the recently released screenshots, players would have been able to choose between various superpowers like electricity and equip their custom heroes with gear that affected their speed, power, and agility stats.

Parent company EG7 announced the cancelation of this Marvel MMO last week, just a few short months after its reveal. “Based on the re-evaluation of the development risk profile, size of investment, and the long-term product portfolio strategy for the group, the board has decided to change the development priorities and reallocate resources within the group to focus on alternative long-term projects.”

Platforms and a release window for the game were never announced, so it’s likely that the game will still very early in development. The game never even saw an official reveal, and we only know of its existence from a November 2021 presentation that had a short blurb about a “Marvel IP based massively multiplayer online game” helmed by Dimensional Ink Studios in Austin, Texas.

It looks like Marvel’s Avengers will remain the multiplayer face of Marvel, and that game is continuing to receive slow but steady support from developer Crystal Dynamics. The recently released Patch 2.4 reworked the game’s reward systems, and the upcoming Patch 2.5 will add Jane Foster, the Mighty Thor, as the next playable her.
