It wouldn’t be a Final Fantasy game without Chocobos, and despite Final Fantasy 15 giving you a car to get around Chocobos are still there when you need them. You can’t own one outright as you have to rent them, but once you do you’ll be able to call on them whenever to navigate the game’s world. This guide will get you set up with your first Chocobo.

Chocobos will not be available to you from the very beginning of the game, but you don’t have to progress too far into the game in order for them to become available. You just need to complete up to chapter 3, and once you’ve done that head on over to Wiz’ Chocobo Post. Talk to Wiz and he’ll give you a new quest called “Friends of a Feather,” and completing that will then result in him giving you the “A Behemoth Undertaking” hunt. You need to kill Deadeye in his layer, and once you’ve done that return to Wiz’ Chocobo Post yet again.

Now that Deadeye is out of the picture you will now have Chocobo terminals available to you, which are called “Rent-A-Bird.” All you have to do is interact with the terminal and purchase a rental ticket, which will cost you 50 gil per day. You can choose how long you want to rent the Chocobo for, with the game allowing you to rent one for up to 30 days. It will go away once you hop off of it, but you’ll be able to call upon it at any time.

Also, if you’re an achievement/trophy hunter, riding a Chocobo for the first time will get you the “Chocobo Jockey” achievement/trophy. These big yellow birds are useful for navigating areas that your car can’t access, and are definitely much faster than going on foot. You can also bring them to camp with you, which will result in them getting buffs along with your characters.

That will about do it for our Chocobo guide for Final Fantasy 15. You may not need Chocobos all that often, but they nevertheless come up big when the occasion calls for them.
