Throughout your time with Fire Emblem: Three Houses you will have many important decisions to make. Who to take into battle, which characters to partner up, how often to talk to all of your teammates. And yet, one of the most significant choices is handed to you very early on, within the first hour or two. It’s the one implied by the title. Here’s which house to pick in Fire Emblem: Three Houses.

Which House to Pick

The answer, of course, is whichever you want. We’ll dig into the details in a bit, but something important to recognize here is that there is no wrong answer. The three houses offered to you as a professor of Garreg Mach Monastery are the Black Eagles, the Blue Lions, and the Golden Deer. Each is unique and filled with interesting characters. No matter which you choose you will have great characters to tag along on your journey. The story will be heavily impacted by this choice, but it will not be ruined no matter which way you go. So at the end of the day your best bet is to explore the Monastery and speak with all the students then decide which House has the ones you want to tag along on your multiple dozen hour adventure. Of course that’s not the answer you wanted. You want a breakdown, so here’s that.

The Black Eagles consists of students from the Adrestian Empire which will one day be led by Edelgard von Hresvelg. The eight students in this house are mostly magic wielders, so choose them if you prefer mages and the sort of combat that that entails. The other side of this coin is that they aren’t the toughest bunch. You’ll have to recruit characters from other Houses if you want any mounted combatants or highly defensive, tank style characters. If you’re more physical with your Fire Emblem combat then you might want to check out the other houses.

Especially the Blue Lions, which come from the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus and are led by Prince Dimitri Blaiddyd. This nation is all about knights and chivalry, meaning the students in this House will be similar. If you prefer getting into your enemy’s face and dealing tons of damage, this is likely the House for you to pick. Of course, in the rock, paper, scissors style of combat found in Fire Emblem: Three Houses this isn’t always the best choice. Archers and other ranged units can take out knights pretty easily if you don’t plan accordingly. If you prefer sticking to a distance and taking your foes out from afar you might prefer the next House instead.

The Golden Deer come from Leicster Alliance along with their leader Claude von Reigan. These guys are all about ranged combat, meaning you’ll find a lot of archers in the mix. This House also seems to be a bit more spread out in terms of abilities and skill, so while they trend toward archers you’ll find a nice mix among them. If you’re more of a generalist in Fire Emblem games, this may be the one for you. But this leaves you open to more streamlined teams of knights or mages, so watch for that in battle.

And that’s all the tips we have now to help you decide which house to pick in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. If you have any tips of your own, or any specific questions shout them out in the comments below.
