There’s little reason to play Super Smash Bros. Ultimate if you don’t wield your fighting abilities against your best friends. While beating AI opponents and random online foes is fun, the most fun is taking on your friends either in person or over the internet. But sometimes getting these matches together can be a bit confusing. Here’s how to play with friends in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Locally is easiest, so let’s explain that real quick. If you have everyone in the same room, just hand out controllers and head to Vs Mode. You can actually play with friends in other modes as well though, including Classic and Mob Smash. Whichever mode you want to get into with friends, just load it up and hit the person with a plus sign icon. Then have everyone press the L and R buttons to activate their player, then choose their character. If you have more than one Switch and copy of SSBU then you can instead choose Wireless Play from the Main Menu.

Online is where things take a different and more confusing turn. After choosing Online Play from the Main Menu, you have a few options. If you don’t care who you play with, just load a random match. But this is how to play with friends in SSBU, so for that you should head to Battle Arena. This is where you can create a lobby and get a code to send to your friends for use. Once they enter it on their side they will join your match and you’re all set. You can also make your Battle Arena open to join, letting them see it on their Friend’s Arenas page.

And that’s how to play with friends in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
