While fishing mini-games are pretty synonymous with Zelda these days, Link’s Awakening was actually the very first addition of the feature. We all take it for granted, but the Game Boy classic was the first time fishing made its way into the series. And it did so with great style, featuring a fun mini-game that offers lots of useful items as well. But you may struggle to understand the intricacies of this seemingly simple system. To help, here’s how to fish in The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening remake for Nintendo Switch.
How to Fish
In case you’re just starting the game, you may wonder where you can fish in Link’s Awakening. The answer is just north of Mabe Village, by visiting the shack near a small pond. The pond contains tons of fish for you to catch, so head there and chat with the man near the pond to get the details. He’ll break it down, but we want to help as well, so here’s the basics of how to fish.
Once the mini-game begins press A to throw out your line. The longer you hold A, the further you will cast. Once you finish your cast and the lure is in the water, it will begin to sink. Wiggle the left thumbstick to try to get the fish’s attention. Once they bite, tap A rapidly to reel in the line and the fish with it. What you’re trying to do, as is the case with most fishing, is to catch the biggest fish. There are a few “Lunkers” in the pond that will give you very good items, including a Heart Piece.
Basically you want to repeat this process, catching any fish you want. The bigger, the better, with “Lunkers” usually showing as green. These will give you the most reward each time you catch them, but you can take your time and catch everything eventually. For the much bigger fish, Cheep Cheep, Blooper, and other unique fish check out this guide. Leave the area and come back to refresh the pond, if you want to keep fishing. There’s also a Fairy Bottle at the bottom of the lake which you need a heavier lure to catch. You should receive this by catching a Lunker. That’s the basics of how to fish in The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening remake for Nintendo Switch.
