Mafia 3 is a really big game, which means players spend a ton of time in it, doing a bunch of different things. With any game like this, your save file becomes more valuable than gold, representing hours of your life. So it’s no surprise that there has been some confusion and questions about how to save in Mafia 3. We’re here to answer the question, but it isn’t so cut and dry as you might hope.

Mafia 3 uses an auto-save system as its sole method of saving the game. You cannot manually save your game via a menu, which has led to a lot of criticism from the gaming community. Instead, you need to rely on the auto-save system to pick up any of your achievements as you play through the game. However, you can have a small amount of control on how the game saves, if you understand how everything works.

If you have done anything that you want to make sure the game saves, just clear an area, complete a mission, or trigger a cutscene. These actions all initiate the auto-save in Mafia 3, and will insure that you have everything in order the next time you start the game. Any time you see the glowing III in the corner of the screen, the game is saving your progress, so watch for that and you’ll know when it’s safe to turn everything off.

I wish I had more info and tips for you, but that’s it for how to save in Mafia 3. As I said, there has been criticism about this system, so hopefully the developer patches in some means of manual saving. If so, we’ll be sure to update this article, so check back then for more info on how to save in Mafia 3.

Mafia 3 is available now for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
