New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe: How to Play as Blue Toad

Prior to its release on Nintendo Switch, New Super Mario Bros. Deluxe was generating a bit of controversy over what some players saw as a step back from the original Wii U title. In its shift to the Switch NSMBU added a few extra characters for players to choose from, with unique abilities that made for an easier overall experience. However, this seemed to make it so four player co-op games would be stuck in this “easy mode” style of gameplay. That is sadly still the case, but you can at least choose from all four original characters. Here’s how to play as Blue Toad in New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe.

Can I just say that I hate that name? Just had to get that out of the way before diving into this thing. OK, so how do you switch between characters? How do you play as Blue Toad in NSMBU Deluxe? Easy, just get to the character select screen and scroll to the default Yellow Toad. Now press either L or ZL to change him to blue. Doing this essentially adds a second Toad character to choose from, nut the game treats them the same. This means you can’t have a game with both Yellow and Blue Toad, limiting you to choose from Nabbit or Toadette for four player games.
