Starting later today trainers in Pokemon GO will be able to find shiny variants of both Pidgey and Rattata. These common characters have been in the game since the very beginning, but it took years for their shiny versions to be added to the game. Now that they are here, the question on everyone’s mind is how to catch shiny Pidgey and Rattata in Pokemon GO.

The launch of these new shinies comes at 4pm Eastern Time today, February 26th. The event is tied to Pokemon Day, a celebration of the franchise that comes around every year and will include a brand new Nintendo Direct as well. While there’s a few bonuses that will be live at the same time, the big prizes will be shiny Pidgey and shiny Rattata. The answer to the big question is basically to play the game as much as possible while the event lasts.

From February 26th to February 28th at 4pm Eastern Time trainers will find these characters much more easily than after the event concludes. During this window you will want to be out playing the game as much as possible, focusing on Pidgey and Rattata catches to maximize your chances of getting enough. If you’re low on supplies, such as Poke Balls, simply tap the Pokemon to see if it is shiny and flee if it is not. Checking every single Pidgey and Rattata you see should eventually yield a few shiny ones, so get out there and play all you can.

Along with shiny Pidgey and shiny Rattata players will see increases Gen 1 spawns including in Raids, there will also be flower-hat Pikachu and Eevee spawning around, so grab some of those as well. These things will disappear once the event ends, but shiny Rattata and shiny Pidgey should stick around, though they’ll be much harder to find. That’s all there is to know about how to catch shiny Pidgey and Rattata in Pokemon GO.
